KEWAUNEE REACTOR SHUTDOWNDESCRIPTION:

On Tuesday, February 27, 2007, the Kewaunee Power Station was at about 100 percent powerand operators had just begun a routine test of one of four nuclear power measuring instrumentswhen an automatic reactor trip occurred. All plant equipment responded as designed to the tripexcept for one valve associated with the main turbine. However, operators promptly closed thevalve manually before any significant complications with stabilizing the reactor occurred. TheNRC senior resident inspector responded to the plant after the reactor trip and observed thelicensee's initial followup activities. A similar test of one of the other three instruments had beencompleted without incident earlier that day. The licensee is completing troubleshooting activities and will make any necessary repairs priorto restarting the reactor. The NRC resident inspectors are observing the licensee's activities.The State of Wisconsin will be notified.
