The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region III staff on this date.

QUAD CITIES UNIT 2 STARTUP AFTER REPAIRS TO THE STEAM PIPING BELLOWS FAILURE INSIDE OF THE MAIN CONDENSER - Update DESCRIPTION:

This is an update to Preliminary Notification (PNO-III-08-013) related to a shutdown for Quad Cities Unit 2. On December 12, 2008, a normal plant shutdown of Unit 2 was performed to enter a planned maintenance outage early in order to investigate a partial loss of feedwater heating.

At 1:30 p.m. CST, on December 20, 2008, Exelon Nuclear Company notified the NRC Resident Inspectors that Quad Cities Unit 2 had commenced a normal reactor startup following a maintenance outage to perform switchyard work and replace extraction steam piping in the main condenser. The reactor was declared critical at 7:24 p.m. CST, on December 20, 2008. The main generator was placed onto the grid at 1:42 a.m. CST, on December 22, 2008.

Currently, the plant is in Mode 1, with power ascension to full rated electrical power in progress.

The NRC resident inspectors are monitoring the utilitys on-going activities.

The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with licensee management.

The State of Illinois has been notified.
