January 10, 2002 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-III-02-001 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region III staff on this date.

SHUT DOWN DUE TO JET PUMP FAILURE DESCRIPTION:

At about 3:20 p.m. CST on January 9, 2002, the licensee began a controlled shutdown of Quad Cities Unit 1 following indication of a problem with one of the 20 jet pumps inside the reactor vessel. The jet pumps are passive devices used to increase the flow of water through the reactor core. The shutdown was required by the licensees Technical Specifications.

Approximately 30 minutes after the jet pump problem, the 1B reactor recirculation pump tripped. Unit 1 has two reactor recirculation pumps which provide forced circulation of water through the reactor core. The cause of the 1B reactor recirculation pump trip is currently unknown and is under investigation by the licensee.

The reactor was shut down at 6:30 p.m. The licensee plans to investigate the causes of the problems and make necessary repairs. The licensee also plans to conduct other maintenance activities during the outage.

The resident inspectors will monitor the licensees investigation and repair activities.

The State of Illinois will be informed. The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with licensee management.

The licensee notified the NRC Operations Center of this event at 5:08 p.m. CST on January 9, 2002. This information is current as of 11 a.m. on January 10, 2002.
