GREATER COLUMBIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE cto January 30, 2009 U 6,I United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chief, Rules and Directives Branch Division of Administrative Services Office of Administration Mailstop TWB-05-BO1 M Washington, DC 20555-0001 Summer.COLEIS@nrc..ov 714

ý40 It has been brought to our attention that South Carolina Electric & Gas and Santee Cooper have applied to the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a combined operating license to construct and operate two new base load nuclear power plants at the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station. May itgo on record that the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce supports the efforts of SCE&G and Santee Cooper to build the new power plants in Fairfield County, specifically Jenkinsville, South Carolina. We strongly believe that the new units will provide needed electrical power for many years.

Also, in respect to South Carolina's economic fiture, we will benefit with the creation of jobs and the further development of our state's competitiveness. As for the powering of our homes and businesses, we are confident that the two new power plants by SCE&G and Santee Cooper will provide new nuclear energy in a safe, reliable and environmentally friendly manner.

Sincerely, Cathy Novinger Charles D. Beaman, Jr. Steve Benjamin Chair, Board of Directors Incoming Chair, 2009-2010 Incoming Chair, 2010-2011 Charles'Ted Speth Ike McLeese Immediate Past Chair, 2007-2008 President/CEO
