Subject: Inspection No. 50-334/85-23

This refers to the routine safeguards inspection conducted by Mr. Jack M.

Dunlap of this office at Beaver Valley Unit 1, Shippingport, Pennsylvania on

October 15-18, 1985 of activities authorized by NRC License No. DPR-66 and to

the discussions of our findings held by Mr. Dunlap with Mr. J. D. Sieber of

your staff at the conclusion of the inspection.

Areas examined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I

Inspection Report which is enclosed with this letter. Within these areas, the

inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative

records, interviews with personnel, and observations by the inspector. The

inspector also reviewed the findings of the NRC's Regulatory Effectiveness

Review which was conducted April 8-12, 1985.

Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were observed.

Certain paragraphs of the enclosed inspection report contain details of your

security program that have been determined to be exempt from public disclosure

in accordance with 10 CFR 73.21 (Safeguards Information) and 10 CFR 9.5(a)(4)

(Commercial or Financial Information). Therefore, the paragraphs so identified

in the inspection report will not be placed in the NRC Public Document Room and

will receive limited distribution. This letter and the remainder of the

enclosure will be placed in the Public Document Room, in accordance with 10 CFR 2.790(a).

No reply to this letter is required.
