Enclosure REOUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON ATWS REVIEW The information provided in your submittal dated October the re 16, 1985, " Meeting (ATWS)quirements for Reduction of Risk of Anticipated Transients Without Scram Events," is not sufficient for the staff to determine that the Clinton design is in compliance with the Comission's regulations.

Provide the following design information as supporting doci: mentation of your method of compliance with 10 CFR 50.62:

1.

The documentation to describe the analysis and/or tests to verify that the Alternate Rod Injection (API) system function time will begin within 15 seconds and be completed within 25 seconds from ARI initiation.

2.

The electrical functional diagrams for the ARI system from the sensors to the solenoid coil of the ARI valves including documentation that the ARI system has redur. dant scram air header exhaust valves which are independent from the backup scram valves.

3.

The electrical one line diagram to demonstrate the electrical indepen-dence between the ARI system and the reactor trip system (RTS).

4.

The qualification information on isolation devices:

For the type of device used to accomplish electrical isolation, a.

describe the specific testing performed to demonstrate that the device is acceptable for its application (s).

This description should include elementary diagrams when necessary to indicate the test configuration and how the maximum credible faults were applied to the devices.

b.

Data to verify that the maximum credible faults applied during the test were the maximum voltage / current to which the device could be exposed.

In addition define how the maximum voltage / current was detemined, Data to verify that the maximum credible fault was applied to the c.

output of the device in the transverse mode (between signal and return) and other faults were considered (i.e., open and short circuits).

Define the pass / fail acceptance criteria for each type of device, Provide a comitment that the isolation devices comply with the e.

environment qualifications (10 CFR 50.49) and with the seismic qualifications which were the basis for plant licensing.

f.

Provide a description of the measures taken to protect the safety systems from electrical interference (i.e., Electrostatic Coupling, EMI, Common Mode and Crosstalk) that may be generated by the ATWS circuits.
