BYRON UNIT 1 AUTOMATIC SHUTDOWN AFTER FALLING ICE CAUSED MAIN POWER TRANSFORMER SHORT CIRCUIT 
 
DESCRIPTION: 
 
On March 3, 2015, at 11:01 a.m. CST Byron Unit 1 automatically shut down after a large piece of ice fell from an electrical conductor (bus bar) over one of the main power transformers resulting in a temporary short circuit condition. All safety systems responded as expected following the automatic shutdown and no complications occurred.
 
After replacing all damaged main power transformer components and following all required post-maintenance testing, Byron Unit 1 was restarted and synchronized to the electrical grid at 10:10 p.m. on March 9, 2015. The NRC resident inspectors assigned to Byron Station monitored portions of post-trip and startup activities.
 
Unit 2 was unaffected and continued to operate at 100 percent power throughout the event.
This preliminary notification is issued for information only and no further action by the staff is anticipated. There was no impact on public health and safety as a result of this event. Exelon issued a press release. State officials have been informed. 
 
The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee, and is current as of March 10, 12:30 p.m. CDT
