Subject: Inspection No. 50-410/87-03

This letter refers to the routine inspection conducted by Mr. H. Gregg of this

office on January 12-16, 1987, at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station Unit 2,

Scriba, New York and on January 26-28, 1987 at the Region I office to review

additional information received af ter the conclusion of the site inspection.

Mr. Gregg discussed the findings of the inspection with Mr. Carl Terry and

other members of your staff at the conclusion of the on site inspection.

The objective of this inspection was to follow up on your activities related

to problems with the ball type Main Steam Isolation Valves (MSIVs). Areas

examined during this inspection are describad in the NRC Region ! Inspection

Report which is enclosed with this letter. Within these areas, the inspection

consisted of selective examination of records, interviews with personnel, and

observations by the inspector. The inspection focused on the progress of

repairing and leak testing the MSIVs and your corrective actions concerning new

problems encountered with these valves.

Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were observed.

No reply to this letter is required. Your cooperation with us in this matter

is appreciated.
