UNUSUAL EVENT DECLARED AT QUAD CITIES DUE TO FREON LEAK IN THE ACCESS BUILDING
 
DESCRIPTION:
 
An Unusual Event was declared at the Quad Cities Nuclear Plant on May 19, 2010, at
 
13:30 p.m. due to a Freon leak in the plant's Access Facility. 
 
The leak was coming from a valve associated with a refrigeration unit on the roof of the building and has been isolated. 
 
All personnel were evacuated from the area. The problem was confined to the Access Facility, which is not connected to any other buildings. 
 
This issue had no impact on plant operation. Both Quad Cities units remained at full power. 
 
The plant's radiation protection personnel took air samples inside the building to make sure Freon readings were down to acceptable levels and to allow acce ss through the A ccess Facility.
NRC resident inspectors monitored the event from the control room and were in communication with NRC Region III and Headquarters staff. 
 
The State of Illinois has been informed. 
 
The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee and is current as of 4:00 p.m. (CDT) on May 19, 2010.
