Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
%i _-
On February 3,1982, the NRC (Mr. C. Julian) was notified by Carolina Power &
Light Company (Mr. N. J. Chiangi) of an item considered potentially reportabic per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). The NRC was informed that welds on some of the 187 previously accepted Seismic I pipe hangers were subsequently found to be rejectable; the primary problem being that the welds are undersized.
The QA/QC Inspector, who originally performed the inspections on those 187 Seismic I pipe hangers and accepted the welds, has since been terminated.
j The intent of this letter is to inform you that Carolina Power & Light Company has not been able to complete its evaluation concerning this matter since the reinspection and evaluation program has not been completed. It has now been determined through reinspection that there are 193 Seismic I pipe hangers involved.
It is now anticipated that the reportability evaluation will be completed by April 30, 1982, at which time the NRC will be informed of the results.
If reportable, a final report will be submitted by May 3, 1982 as indicated in our first interim report.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Yours very truly, W'
