I g UCLA OPERATOR REQUALIFICATION PROGRAM The UCLA Operator Requalification Program is in accordance with !
10 CFR 55 and ANS 15.4 as applicable to the UCLA research reactor.
It also incorporates a recommendation by the UCt.A (Reactor) Radiation Use Committee to hold monthly operator meetings and to provide instructions at those meetings in fulfillment of requalification objectives.
The program consists of an ongoing lecture series to augment on-the-job experience. The series consists of one, two-hour session each month for twelve months to complete a cycle. Attendence by all operators and senior reactor operators is generally required, but individuals may be excused if records from the prior year requalification test show better than minimal (757.) understanding of the subject area.
The lecture schedule is as follows:
- 1. Reactor Physics: nuclear definitions and terminology, radiation, radioactive decay, and mass defect;
- 2. Reactor Physics: fission process, cross sections, fast and thermal neutron distributions and activation analysis;
- 3. Reactor Physics; neutron slodng down and diffusion theory, effective neutron multiplication factor, buckling and reflectors; 4 Reactor Kinetics: reactivity equations, core reactivity coefficients (temperature, void, and mass) and control rod theory; ,
- 5. UCLA R-1 Reactor Characteristics: tech *nical specifications and core design;
- 6. Reactor Plumbing and Ventilation System;
- 7. Reactor Instrumentation and Control Systems;
- 8. Reactor Instrumentation and Control Systems;
- 9. Health Physics: radiation effects, control, safety and Title 10, Part 20, Code of Federal Regulations.
- 10. Procedures: reactor operations, emergency, sample loading, rabbit, and refueling; system limits, and relation of procedures to Technical Specification limits and requirements,
- 11. Problem Solving: activation, criticality, sample worth, reactivity, period and control rod worth; and
- 12. Qualification Examination: written and oral walk through exams.
