For hanger members, the loads are combined at the stress level, and the signs of individual loads are maintained. The attached example hanger illustrates the Ebasco load combination methodology. BACKGROUND: The following is the general criteria used for the qualification of single angles used in the CTH's: o Attachment E of Referance 1 specifies that all principle axis j l properties of angle sections,shall be used in design verification. o Sheet 2 and Attachment E of Reference 1 specifies that braces be modeled as pin connected members but checked for the effect J of eccentricities at end connections. l l } An allowable bending stress of 0.6 Fy is used. 1 o l l lhe radius of gyration is taken about the minor principal axis { i o l l to determine the design compressive stress allowables. l i t I l DISCUSSION: Single angle sections used as stmictural members in CPSES cable f tray hangers are generally bracing members. Attachment of the angles to other structural members is generally such that bending may be induced in the angles. However, the predominant effect of the members on structural response is a result of I their axial, not their flexurn, stiffness. The angle members which have Deen qualified to date have exhibited relatively low levels of stress. A listing of 190 interaction ratios is presented in Reference 2. Recently, the AISC, which is responsible for the specification used for the design of the CPSES CTH's, has been working to deve op a criteria / specification for the design of single j angles. This criteria provides more appropriate guidance and i addresses more specifically the behavior of angle sections in l flexure, as well as, axial compression. Much of this work to i develop this criteria has been performed by consultants to the AISC and has resulted from the needs of specific design projects. As a result of this work, a set of design equations which can be used to determine the allowable bending stress for angles have been recommended and adopted by the NRC [ Reference 3] for design on a recent nuclear project. These design equations .j have been compared in Figure 1 with the Ebasco CPSES criteria l (which was developed prior to Reference 3) for common CTH angles. Ibis comparison demonstrates that the Ebasco criteria, though not as rigorous, is conservative and has adequately addressed the flexural behavior of the angle sections. l 3724M

l Sheet 2 of 4' TU ELECTRIC COMANCHE FEAK SES-CABLE 'IRAY HANGER SINGLE ANG1E DESIGN l DISCUSSION: (cont'd) Attachment E of Reference 1 is being revised to require that angles conform to.the AISC Section 1.9.1.2 compactness-requirements and to provide a method for educing the allowable-bending stress if an angle section does not conform to'AISC I Section 1.9.1.2. This method for reducing the allowable. bending stress is described in Reference 5 and is conservative when comparad to the criteria in Reference 3 as demonstrated in Figure 2. CONCLUSION: The Ebasco design verification procedures are shown to be conservative in comparison to a more recently presented criteria for the common CTH angle sections. For other angle j sections, the Ebasco procedures are conservative. Furthermore, as shown in Reference 2, the bracing angles act primarily as axial members and flexural stresses are not significant to the overall angle qualification.

EB-T-3195 July 2, 1987 r-f 4 ATTACHMENT 1 TU ELECTRIC COMANCHE PEAK SES l Ebasco's Position on Dynamic System Test Correlation Studies 1 Ebasco's Cable Tray System Post-Test Correlation Study documented in Volume I l Book 24 compares analytical results (RSM and ESM) with ANCO test results for Test Configuration No. 7 and demonstrates the conservatism of Ebssco's RSM and ESM methodology. This study was performed prior to Ebasco's incorporation of longitudinal connectivity between tray and hanger in design verification. In light of Ebasco's current inclusion of connectivity in its RSM and ESM design verification procedures, the subject study is no longer required, and is therefore deleted from Ebasco's project documentation, for the following reasons: Ebasco's current RSM methodology is consistent with that of Impell. t a. l Thus, Impe11's test correlation studies are now the project's documentation on the subject applicable to both Impell and Ebasco. b. Ebasco's studies in Volume I Books 9, 10, 15 and 23 demonstrate that i Ebasco's ESM methodology gives responses which are conservative compared to RSM responses.
