On May 16, 2001, at 1338 hours, Calvert Cl … On May 16, 2001, at 1338 hours, Calvert Cliffs Unit 1 experienced a failure of an auxiliary feedwater pump turbine bearing during a surveillance test.</br></br>At the time of the failure, T the plant was in Mode 1 with power at 100 percent rated thermal power.</br></br>The cause of the bearing failure was the introduction of Permatex 2 sealant into the bearing. T The vendor technical manual specified the use of too much sealant on the bearing housing sealing surfaces. T This caused some sealant to extrude inside the housing at the sealing surface edges and eventually into the lubricating oil that supplies the babbited bearing. T The sealant was then able to migrate into the bearing and cause its failure.</br></br>The vendor technical manual will be revised and applicable maintenance procedures are being updated to ensure less sealant is used in the future.</br></br>Training on this issue will be conducted with appropriate maintenance personnel.ed with appropriate maintenance personnel. +
