NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.08-120 June 26, 2008 SUMMER APPLICATION FOR NEW REACTORS AVAILABLE ON NRCS WEBSITE The Nuclear Regulatory Commission today made available the public version of a combined license (COL) application for two new reactors at the Summer site near Columbia, S.C.

The applicants, South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) and Santee Cooper, submitted the application and associated information March 31. The application, minus proprietary or security-related details, is available on the NRC Web site at:

http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-licensing/col.html.

The application seeks approval to build and operate two AP1000 reactors at the site, approximately 26 miles northwest of Columbia. The AP1000 is a 1,100 MWe pressurized-water reactor design the NRC certified in 2006. The agency is currently reviewing a Westinghouse application, submitted in May 2007, to amend the certified design. More information regarding the review is available on the NRCs Web site at:

http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-licensing/design-cert/amended-ap1000.html.

The NRC staff will conduct an initial check of the combined license application to determine whether it contains sufficient information required for a formal review. If the application passes the initial check, the NRC will docket, or accept it for review; this decision is expected this summer. If the staff accepts the application for formal review, the NRC will then notice an opportunity for the public to request an adjudicatory hearing on the application.
