NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region II 61 Forsyth Street SW, Atlanta GA 30303 Web Site: www.nrc.gov No. II-09-057 October 16, 2009 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 562-4417 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 562-4416 NRC ASSIGNS NEW SENIOR RESIDENT INSPECTOR TO CATAWBA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials have selected Andy Hutto as the new senior resident inspector at Duke Energys Catawba nuclear power plant, located near York, S.C., about 18 miles south of Charlotte.

Hutto joined the NRC in 1998 as a resident inspector at Progress Energys Robinson plant near Hartsville, S.C. He later served as a resident inspector and then senior resident inspector at Duke Energys Oconee Nuclear Station near Seneca, S.C. Before joining the agency, he worked for the U.S. Navy as a civilian nuclear shift test engineer at the Charleston Naval Shipyard.

Hutto received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering from Clemson University.

Andy Hutto has the experience and commitment to safety to carry out the NRC mission of protecting people and the environment, and to help ensure the safe operation of the Catawba plant, said NRC Region II Administrator Luis Reyes.

At least two NRC resident inspectors are assigned to each U.S. commercial nuclear plant.

They serve as the agency's eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public. Resident inspectors can serve at one site for up to seven years.

Hutto joins Resident Inspector Ron Cureton and Site Secretary Lee Harmon at the Catawba plant. The Catawba resident inspectors can be reached at 803-831-2963.
