Diane Screnci, 610-337-5330 Neil Sheehan, 610-337-5331 NRC to Conduct Public Meeting on Jan. 16 to Receive Comments on Crystal River 3 Decommissioning Activities Report The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a public meeting on Jan. 16 in Crystal River, Fla., to discuss and receive comments on the Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report (PSDAR) for the Crystal River 3 nuclear power plant.

The report was submitted to the NRC on Dec. 2. It describes Duke Energys plans under the decommissioning option it has selected, including putting structures on the site into SAFSTOR for many years, the eventual dismantling of those buildings, the removal of components and the clean-up of any residual radioactivity.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the plants Training Center/Emergency Operations Facility, located at 8200 Venable St. in Crystal River.

Crystal River 3 is a pressurized-water reactor located in Crystal River. Duke Energy formally notified the NRC on Feb. 20, 2013, that the plant, which had been shut down since 2009, had permanently ceased operations and that the nuclear fuel had been permanently removed from the reactor.

A copy of the PSDAR can be viewed on the NRCs web site, in the agencys ADAMS electronic documents system, using Accession Number ML13340A009.

In addition to the Jan. 16th meeting, the NRC is also accepting written comments on the decommissioning report. The deadline for submitting comments on the report is March 5, 2014.

Written comments can be submitted using the Docket ID, NRC-2013-0283, on the Regulations.Gov web site. Comments may also be submitted, using the Docket ID, via mail to: Cindy Bladey, Chief, Rules, Announcements and Directives Branch, Office of Administration, Mail Stop: 3WFN-06-A44M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, D.C. 20555.
