NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region I 475 Allendale Road, King of Prussia, Pa. 19406 www.nrc.gov No. I-03-67 November 10, 2003 CONTACT: Diane Screnci, 610/337-5330 Email: opa1@nrc.gov Neil Sheehan, 610/337-5331 NRC ASSIGNS NEW SENIOR RESIDENT INSPECTOR TO BEAVER VALLEY The Nuclear Regulatory Commissions Region I Office has named a new resident inspector for the Beaver Valley nuclear power plant, in Shippingport, Pa. Paul C. Cataldo has been assigned to the two-unit site, which is operated by First Energy Corp.

Mr. Cataldo joins Resident Inspector Galen Smith at Beaver Valley. He replaces David Kern, who was reassigned as the Senior Resident Inspector at Three Mile Island.

Most recently, Mr. Cataldo was an NRC resident inspector at Millstone Station in Waterford Conn. He joined the NRCs Region III office near Chicago in 1996 as an operator licensing examiner.

Prior to joining the agency, Mr. Cataldo was a materials test reactor operator at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. He also has experience in the manufacturing industry, in which he performed, among other things, quality assurance inspections, between 1989 and 1993. Mr. Cataldo also served as a machinist's mate aboard a U.S. Navy nuclear attack submarine.

Mr. Cataldo is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell with a bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering.

Each U.S. commercial nuclear plant has at least two NRC resident inspectors. They serve as the agency's eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public.

Mr. Cataldo and the Beaver Valley resident inspectors can be reached at 724/643-2000.
