No: 18-064 December 21, 2018 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC to Hold Public Meeting Seeking Comment on Environmental Review for Surry Subsequent License Renewal Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet in Surry, Va., on Jan. 8, 2019, for public comment on environmental issues the agency should consider in reviewing Virginia Electric and Power Companys (Dominion Energy Virginia) application for an additional 20 years of operation for Surry Units 1 and 2.

The NRC will hold the meeting at the Surry Administrators Office at the Surry Government Center, 45 School St., in Surry, from 6-8 p.m. Staff presentations will describe the environmental and safety review processes and the proposed review schedule. The presentations will be followed by a formal public comment session. An NRC open house, from 5-6 p.m., will provide members of the public the opportunity to speak informally with agency staff.

Those preferring to register in advance to comment at the meeting should contact Tam Tran by telephone at 301-415-3617 or via e-mail at tam.tran@nrc.gov by Jan. 3, 2019. Commenters may also register in person at the venue by 5:45 p.m. Individual comments could be limited by the time available and the number of people expecting to speak. Individuals with special needs for attending or presenting information at the meetings also should contact Mr. Tran by Jan. 3.

NRC staff will consider written comments on environmental issues until Jan. 22, 2019, following the publication of a notice in the Federal Register. Include Docket ID NRC-2018-0280 with the comment, via the regulations.gov website.

Dominion submitted the Surry subsequent license renewal application on Oct. 15. The subsequent license renewal process determines whether an operating reactor can extend its license for an additional 20 years. The application, less the proprietary details, is available on the NRC website. In addition, staff at the Williamsburg Library, at 515 Scotland St., in Williamsburg, Va., have agreed to maintain a copy of the applications environmental report for public inspection.
