NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa.resource@nrc.gov Site: www.nrc.gov Blog: http://public-blog.nrc-gateway.gov No.13-021 March 28, 2013 NRC TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETINGS APRIL 3 TO DISCUSS SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEWS OF SEQUOYAH LICENSE RENEWAL The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold two public meetings Wednesday, April 3, in Soddy Daisy, Tenn., to discuss the agencys review of the Tennessee Valley Authoritys application to renew the operating license of the Sequoyah nuclear power plant.

During the meetings, NRC staff members will explain the license renewal process and solicit public comments on the scope of the environmental review. The meetings will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Soddy Daisy City Hall, 9835 Dayton Pike.

The Sequoyah plant has two pressurized-water reactors and is located in Soddy Daisy, Tenn., about 16 miles northeast of Chattanooga. The current operating licenses expire Sept. 17, 2020, for Unit 1 and Sept. 15, 2021, for Unit 2. TVA submitted an application in January to renew the licenses for an additional 20 years. The NRC docketed the application in early March and published a notice of opportunity to request an adjudicatory hearing on March 5. The deadline to request a hearing is May 6.

Public comments on the scope of the environmental review may also be submitted in writing, following submittal instructions published March 8 in the Federal Register. The deadline to submit scoping comments is May 3.

The Sequoyah license renewal application and information about the license renewal process are available on the NRC website.
