SUBJECT:
HYDROGEN FIRE IN RADWASTE BUILDING A hydrogen fire occurred in the common (Units 2,3) radwaste building on 12/01/89 around 1430 PST during the changeout of a relief valve on a waste gas decay tank. The fire was controlled within 10 minutes, but burned for approximately 55 minutes from the end of the 2" pipe.
There was no injury or equipment damage. There was a slight rise in the radioactivity monitored in the vent stack (from 10 micro curies per second to 30 micro.curies per second) during the first hour, but within technical specification limits. After the fire died out, the flange connection was re-connected to prevent the leakage of additional hydrogen gas.
The area was then ventilated to prevent the accumulation of hydrogen gas.
The licensee is conducting a root cause evaluation prior to resuming work on the system.
The resident inspectors are following the licensee's evaluation of root cause and corrective actions.
