SHUTDOWN TO REPAIR STEAM GENERATOR TUBE LEAK On the evening of March 16, 1988, Southern California Edison (SCE) commenced a reactor shutdown as a result of a steam generator tube leak. The licensee first noticed a primary to secondary leak in February, 1988. However, the amount of leakage remained below 60 gallons per day (gpd, as determined by Cesium 138 concentrations) until March 15, 1988, at which time the amount increased to 77 gpd. The Technical Specifications limit for tube leakage is 720 gpd per steam generator. On the morning of March 16, the leak rate had increased to 86 gpd. As a result, SCE scheduled a reactor shutdown for the evening shift to effect repairs. A final measurement shortly before shutdown indicated that tube leakage had increased to 200 gpd. SCE expects that the outage should take 3 to 4 weeks and hopes to have Unit 2 back on line prior to the Unit 3 refueling outage which is currently scheduled for mid April 1988.
The resident inspectors are following the licensee's actions.
