EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA The news media reported the occurrence of an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 to 5.8 and about 15 seconds duration in southern California at about 8:50 a.m. PDT. According to early reports, the epicenter is located in the San Pedro Channel off the coast of Long Beach and about 45 miles northwest of the San Onofre site.
The Resident Inspector at San Onofre reports that the earthquake was midly felt at San Onofre, but there was no apparent damage of any kind.
The seismic triggers (setpoint = 0.01 ) ware tripped and the licensee is following the inspection procedure 9
specified for such an event.
The Resident Inspector will follow up on the licensee's findings.
Media interest is expected.
Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to issue a news ralease.
Region V (San Francisco) received notification of this occurrence from the Resident Inspector and media reports at 9:00 a.m. on 9/04/81.
