POSSIBLE INACCURATE MEDIA COVERAGE CONCERNING REACTOR SHUTDOWN The unit was shutdown at about 2300 hours0.0266 days <br />0.639 hours <br />0.0038 weeks <br />8.7515e-4 months <br /> on June 27, 1980 for a planned outage to perform modifications to the auxiliary feedwater system.
Following a manual reactor trip, the position indicator for control rod D-3 indicated the rod had not scrammed.
Emergency procedures for a stuck rod were initiated.
Within 30 minutes it was determined that the problem was a position indication problem instead of a stuck control rod.
At 0044 hours5.092593e-4 days <br />0.0122 hours <br />7.275132e-5 weeks <br />1.6742e-5 months <br /> on June 28, 1980, during cooldown and depressurization, an automatic safety injection occurred app'arently due to a failure to manually bypass the low reactor coolant system pressure signal.
The ECCS equipment. functioned properly.
The injection was manually terminated after 3 minutes and the cooldown continued.
'I A South Bend, Indiana TV"news reporter learned of the event and contacted the Head-quarters Duty Officer.
He was referred to the RIII Duty Officer who then discussed the safety injection portion of the event with him.,
The licensee reported that the TV station subsequently carried a report of a s'afety injection with a stuck rod and a
pump failure to the facility.
