SUBJECT:

PALISADES REACTOR TRIP (UPDATE)

==

Description:==

On October 2, 2011, Palisades restarted following a forced outage. Palisades entered the forced outage on September 25, 2011, following an automatic reactor trip due to the loss of one of two trains of direct current (DC) power. The loss of the DC bus took place due to an electric fault that occurred in a DC distribution panel while plant workers were performing troubleshooting activities.

The NRC resident inspectors, augmented by a Special Inspection Team, monitored operator actions following the reactor trip, as well as, the repair activities. Before the reactor start-up, the NRC inspectors reviewed the evaluations and tests performed to assure the adequacy of the plant repairs. In addition, the inspectors were present in the control room to monitor the subsequent restart. The Special Inspection Team continues to evaluate this event and will issue a report after completion of the inspection.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only. The state of Michigan has been informed. The NRC issued a press release on September 28, 2011, describing the event and the start of a Special Inspection Team to review the event.

The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee, and is current as of 10:30 a.m. (CST), on October 3, 2011.
