PALISADES FORCED SHUTDOWN FOR GREATER THAN 72 HOURS TO REPLACE LEAKING CONTROL ROD DRIVE SEAL (UPDATE)

DESCRIPTION:

On February 20, 2009, the Palisades plant resumed operation after a maintenance outage that was started on February 17, 2009, to replace a leaking control rod drive seal. The reactor was made critical at 5:37 p.m. (CDT) on February 20, 2009, and the main generator was synchronized to the grid at 1:49 a.m. (CDT) on February 21, 2009. The licensee replaced one control rod drive seal during the outage.

The resident inspectors observed the licensee returning the plant to operation.

The State of Michigan will be notified. The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with licensee management.
