PREPARATIONS FOR HURRICANE GEORGES At 8:00 a.m. on September 24, 1998, Hurricane Georges was located approximately 350 miles south-southwest of the Turkey Point Nuclear Plant (TPNP) with the center estimated near latitude 21

~ 1 North and longitude 77.00 We'st. -The storm is moving west-northwest at 12 mph with potential landfall in the Florida Keys projected early on September 25.

Florida Power and Light Company (FPBcL) is continuing to prepare for the approach of th'e hurricane, including implementation of procedures for severe weather preparations.

The licensee declared an Unusual Event for TPNP Units 3 and 4 at 5:06 a.m. on September 24 due to a Hurricane Warning being issued for the area. Unit 3 shut down on'eptember 21 for a scheduled refueling outage and is currently in mode S. The licensee suspended outage activities and has maintained the reactor coolant system intact.

The licensee is monitoring the progress of the hurricane and plans to place Unit 4 in hot shutdown conditions in advance of hurricane force winds approaching the site.

Local officials have instituted a mandatory evacuation of Monroe County.,A voluntary evacuation is in effect for portions of Dade County.

One Turkey Point NRC resident inspector is onsite monitoring the licensee's activities, with another resident and two additional regional inspectors enroute to the site. A Region II manager is enroute to the FPEcL Emergency Operations Facility (EOF) in Miami. The Region II NRC State Liaison Oficer was dispatched to the Florida Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Tallahassee.
