MEDIA INTEREST IN TURKEY POINT STATUS AF.TER HURRICANE ANDREW There has been significant media interest in the status of Turkey Point Units 3 and 4 after Hurricane Andrew.

The media interest is expected to increase with the Unit 4 startup. Unit.4 is currently scheduled to be on line by j

l September 30.

Plant heat up could begin as early as this weekend (September 26 or 27) and the unit could be on line as early as September 29.

Centinuous NRC inspecter coverage of the startup is scheduled.

furkey Point exited the hurricane-related Unusual Event at 12:20 p.m. EDT en September 22, 1992, when repairs to the meteorological tower were completed and all safeguards systems were re-established.

The radiation monitors and 4

warning sirens have been restored. The remaining fossil unit stack has been l

examined by the licensee and the NRC and determined to be safe.

The interim fire water supply system will be fully functional and will satisff technical I

specification requirements prior to Unit 4 restart.

It will differ frem ths normal fire water supply system in that one of the two Raw Water Tanks (fire pump supply) is not availabie, as it was destroyed by the hurricane.

Two alternate backup sources of fire water are in place:

1) sea water through three screen wash pumps, and 2) sea water through three portable diesel l

powered pumps.

The interim fire water supply. system has been evaluated by the NRC and found to be satisfactory. NRC inspection of the fire water supply system will be ccmpleted prior to Unit 4 restart.
