SUBJECT:
REACTOR TRIP AND PRIMARY TO SECONDARY LEAX The following is an update to PNO-II-89-19 regarding the McGuire Unit i reactor trip and primary to secondary leak.
PNO-II-89-19 stated that the leak was 100-150 gpm.
The licensee's calculations now show that the initial leak may have been as high as 340 gpm prior to the manual reactor trip, and then decreased to 100-150 gpm.
At 8:20 a.m. (EST) on March 8,1989, auxiliary feedwater was initiated to the affected steam generator, backfeeding the primary system through the breck.
The licensee is depressurizing and cooling down the plant, maintaining secondary pressure slightly above primary pressure. All safety systems are functioning normally.

) licensee of spatched an offsite radiological monitoring team at 6:48 a.m. (EST) on L.a 8, 1989, and no radioactivity was detected h a background.
The licensee will maintain the Alert condition until the decay heat removal system is placcd in service (at approximately 350* and 385 psi).
The Region II Ir.cident Response Center will remain activated until the Alert condition is terminated.
An Augmented Inspection Team was dispatched from Region II on March 8, 1989, to investigate the event. The Resident Inspectors are onsite.
