CHANGE IN CONSTRUCTION PLANS

4 CP&L announced today that its directors have approved cancellation of Un hand-4166 the Shearon Harris plant and a one-year extension of the estimated complet 42dAtVfor Unit 2.
Unit l's estimated completion date remains at 1985, while the date for Unit 2 is changed from 1988 to 1989, under the revised schedule.
The company announcement cited a drop in forecast annual load growth, conservation by customers and improved load management techniques as the basis for the decision.
Unit 1 is more than 50 percent complete, and Unit 2 is less than 10 percent complete.
Units 3 and 4 are now less than one percent complete.
Wide media interest is expected because of the CP&L announcement.
The NRC does not plan a press release. The State of North Carolina has been notified.
Region.II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at noon on December 16, 1981.
