May 24, 2005 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PNO-II-05-002 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of possible safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by Region II staff (Atlanta, Georgia) on this date.

VOGTLE UNIT 2 SHUTDOWN TO REPAIR CONDENSER TUBE(S) LEAK At 11:00 p.m., EST on May 23, 2005, the licensee shutdown Unit 2 due indications of a condenser tube leak in accordance with licensee procedures. Prior to the leak, the licensee had determined that the 3C feedwater heater extraction steam bellows had ruptured internal to the condenser and were making plans to shutdown the unit to effect repairs. The licensee is investigating whether there is a correlation between the two issues.

To promulgate the repairs to the condenser the unit will be taken to Mode 5.

The unit will remain shutdown until repairs are made to both the extraction steam bellows and the leaking condenser tube(s).

The resident Inspector was made aware of the plant issues on May 23 at approximately 10:20 p.m. Media inquires have not been made to the licensee and a press release will not be made. The state of Georgia has not been notified.
