Subject:
TRAFFIC ACCIDENT INVOLVING SHIPMENT OF LOW LEVEL RADI0 ACTIVE WASTE At 7:30 p.m. on December 22, 1980, a Chem Nuclear tractor trailer carrying a cask containing 570 mci of mixed fission products was involved in a traffic acci-dent near Bordentown, New Jersey.
There were no injuries and there was no visible damage to the trailer or the cask, but the tractor was disabled.
Sur-veys performed by the State of New Jersey, Bureau of Emergency Response, showed no contamination or excessive radiation levels on the outside of the cask or trailer. The cask was enroute from Millstone, Connecticut to Barnwell, South Carolina.
A second Chem Nuclear tractor-trailer arrived approximately 1/2 hour later, left its own trailer in an area secured by an electrified fence and patrols, and hauled the first shipment to South Carolina.
The radionuclides identified in the shipment were 10 mci of Cs-137,15 mci of Mn-54, 431 mci of Co-60, 5 mci of Sr-89, 0.5 mci of Sr-90, 44.6 mci of Fe-55, and.4 mci of Ni-63.
The cask contained less than 10 mci of transuranics.
