Reference:

NRC Generic Letter 2008-01, "ManagingGas Accumulation in Emergency Core Cooling,Decay Heat Removal, and ContainmentSpray Systems,"

dated January 11, 2008.

Generic Letter 2008-01 (referenced above) requires submittal of a 3-month response if it is not deemed possible to meet the requested 9-month response date. During a teleconference between PPL (R. Sgarro) and NRC (J. Wermeil) on April 8, 2008, PPL requested an extension to the timeline for the 3-month response. The extension was requested based on:

" evolving expectations for the 9-month response;

  • necessary engineering resources that are currently heavily involved in refueling outage completion and startup activities associated with extended power uprate; and

" the need for additional time to identify the actions, which will be completed both prior to and after the 9-month response date (October 11, 2008).

Based on the above Mr. Wermeil granted an extension of the 3-month response until May 30, 2008.

Any questions regarding this letter should be directed to Mr. Duane L. Filchner at (610) 774-7819.
