_dated April 8, 2004.___

The purpose of this letter is provide additional information on the Susquehanna SES Unit I NIB and N2J nozzle weld overlays and to withdraw the exemption to Code Case N-638 paragraph 4.0(b) in Relief Request No. 31 (Reference 2).

The NIB nozzle overlay did not have any laminar indications.

The6N2J nozzle overlay had 14 laminar indications that were reported in the post overlay inspection. Of these, 11 were in the 'original base metal and 3 were in the overlay material.' The calculation states that all of the fourteen (14) indications are located outside of the portion of the overlay,'which is required to ensure the structural integrity of the N2J nozzle.

In Reference 2, PPL requested an exception to Code Case N-638 paragraph 4.0(b) for UT examination due to' the nozzle configuration associated with the N2J weld. Code Case N-638 paragraph 4.0(b) requires that the final weld surface and a band around the nozzle from toe of the weld overlay of at least 11/2 the component thickness or 5 inches, whichever is less, shall be examined using surface and ultrasonic methods. For the N2J weld overlay, this equates to 2 inches from the toe of the weld overlay. PPL was able to ultrasonically examine a 2.6-inch band around the nozzle from the toe of the weld overlay. Surface exams were performed for the required two inches.

fVL/

Document Control Desk PLA-5842 Since the 2-inch band around the nozzle from the toe of the weld overlay was achieved, the exemption to Code Case N-638 paragraph 4.0(b) is no longer required. Therefore, PPL withdraws the request for the exemption to Code Case N-638 paragraph 4.0(b) in Relief Request No. 31 (Reference 2).
