Dear Dr. ' Murley:
PP&L initially responded to IE Bulletin 83-03 on June 9, 1983 (PLA-1697).
This letter serves to provide the final report of inspections conducted pursuant to the bulletin and to provide the status of other commitments made in our original response.
Inservice Inspection Program Revision 2 to the Susquehanna SES Unit 1 Pump and Valve ISI program was submitted on June 30, 1983 (PLA-1731). This revision included new ISI requirements for the twelve check valves in the ESW system flowpati for supplying cooling water to the diesels. The Unit 2 Pump and Valve ISI Program was submitted December 31, 1984 (PLA-2319). It did not include these valves since they are all common valves and the Unit 2 Program was established to cover only those valves not included in the Unit 1 Program.
Inspections of these valves are planned only for Unit I refueling outages with half the valves to be inspected during each outage.
Initial Valve Inspections All twelve check valves were disassembled and inspected prior to or during the Unit i first refueling outage to confirm the integrity of the valve internals.
This included eight Pacific check valves at the Diesel Generator bays and four Anchor Darlina check valves at the ESW pump discharges. The inspections were completed on May 10, 1985. All valves were determined to be satisfactory except 0-11-039 which was discovered to be partially disassembled. Upon disassembly, the check valve disc was found to be not seating properly. The disc nut was found to be loose caused by the disc nut pin being partially out of the nut. The cause of the pin coming out was due to the pin not being peened over sufficiently when the valve was initially assembled. Over time, b

vibration had caused the pin to vibrate out of the disc stud allowing the disc nut to loosen. The valve was reassembled and the disc nut pin was properly peened.
This completes PP&L's actions in response to IE Bulletin 83-03.
