Meeting Summary:
On August 22, 2024, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held an observation meeting with TerraPower to provide the NRC staff with an overview of the Comprehensive Vibration Assessment Program (CVAP) strategy proposed for the Natrium design. Participants included representatives from TerraPower. The NRC staff conducted the meeting in accordance with NRC Management Directive 3.5, Attendance at NRC Staff-Sponsored Meetings (ML21180A271).
The meeting began with TerraPower providing an overview of the operating experience of sodium fast reactors. TerraPower next gave an overview of the Natrium CVAP strategy, including relevant regulatory guidance such as Regulatory Guide 1.20, Comprehensive Vibration Assessment Program for Reactor Internals During Preoperational and Initial Startup Testing, the goal of the Natrium CVAP, and goal of the meeting. TerraPower then presented on vibration mechanisms, including mechanical induced vibration, acoustic induced vibration, acoustic resonance, and flow-included vibration. TerraPower provided an overview of the vibration operating experience incorporated for the CVAP strategy for the Natrium design and named historical CVAPs that had been developed for other facilities.
At the end of the meeting, the TerraPower representatives and the NRC staff discussed the next steps for future interactions regarding the Natrium design.
No regulatory decisions were made as a result of this meeting. No public comments were received in the meeting.
