SUMMARY
OF OCTOBER 20, 2023, PRESUBMITTAL MEETING WITH ARIZONA PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY TO DISCUSS PLANNED PROPOSED ALTERNATIVES FOR A PRESSURIZER THERMOWELL NOZZLE REPAIR AT PALO VERDE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNIT 1 (EPID L-2023-LLR-0057)
On October 20, 2023, an Observation public meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and Arizona Public Service Company (the licensee) via webinar. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss planned proposed alternatives for a pressurizer thermowell nozzle repair at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1. The meeting notice and agenda, dated October 19, 2023, are available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No. ML23292A106. A list of attendees is provided in the enclosure.
The licensee presented informational slides at the meeting, which are available in ADAMS at Accession No. ML23296A016. The licensees presentation included background information, identification of the pressurizer leak, the nozzle design history, description of the pressurizer nozzle repair, the American Society of Mechanical Engineering Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Requirements, the proposed alternative, and the proposed schedule. The proposed alternative would be applicable for one operating cycle while a separate proposed alternative would be submitted for continued use of the nozzle repair for the life of the plant. The NRC staff focused on the design, the design of the repair, and information to consider to be included in the submittal.
No members of the public called into the meeting. No regulatory decisions or commitments were made at the meeting. Additionally, the NRC staff did not receive Public Meeting Feedback forms.
