Guidance for the January 31, 2023, - February 1, 2023, Monitoring Onsite Observation Visit to the Savannah River Site Saltstone Disposal Facility GUIDANCE FOR THE JANUARY 31, 2023, - FEBRUARY 1, 2023, MONITORING ONSITE OBSERVATION VISIT TO THE SAVANNAH RIVER SITE SALTSTONE DISPOSAL FACILITY The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff is planning an onsite observation visit (OOV) on January 31, 2023, - February 1, 2023, to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE),

Savannah River Site (SRS) Saltstone Disposal Facility (SDF) to monitor the DOE activities related to the disposal of Waste Incidental to Reprocessing (WIR), per the NRC responsibilities under the Ronald W. Reagan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005 (NDAA).

This OOV is designated as SDF-CY23-01. The guidance below describes the activities for this OOV. The detailed agenda and summary will be included in the OOV Report.

The NRC plans to conduct the following activities during this OOV and next to an activity is any appropriate associated monitoring factor(s) from either the current NRC NDAA-WIR SDF Monitoring Plan (NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML13100A113) or the six NRC Letters that supplemented that NRC NDAA-WIR SDF Monitoring Plan (ML17097A351, ML18033A071, ML18107A161, ML18219B035, ML19150A295, ML21279A173):

Technical discussion of recent operations, including saltstone disposal volumes, saltstone inventory, and worker dose (Monitoring Factor (MF) 1.01, MF 1.02, MF 8.01, and MF 11.01); and Technical tours, including specific aspects of construction of both Saltstone Disposal Structure (SDS) 8 and SDS 10 (MF 6.04, MF 6.05, and MF 8.01)

For the SDF, the history of both the DOE NDAA-WIR Consultation with the NRC under NDAA Section 3116(a) and the NRC NDAA-WIR Monitoring, in coordination with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, under NDAA Section 3116(b) was in a previous OOV Guidance Memo (ML18155A389).
