jh November 4, 1976 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURR This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:

REPORT OF FE-55 AND CO-60 SOURCES STOLEN FROM AN AUTO IN Region I received a call from a Boston newspaper reporter at 11:55 a.m. tod regarding the recovery of a stolen automobile in Quincy, Mass. area.

auto supposedly contained Fe-55 and.co-60 (later determined to be Co-57)-

The Calls to the local police and from other reporters subseque sources.

that the radioisotopes were not in the auto, but were missing from the recovered auto.

The stories further. indicated that the local police roped for the sources with geiger counters.off streets in the area from which t reported sources were unknown.

The quantities and origins of the the Boston area to the scene.

Region I has sent an inspector who was in a student from Columbia U.

The sources were originally attributed to Columbia U. was contacted and stated that there was no authorized use of any radioisotopes out of New York State.

The most recent information indicates that the Fe-55 has been recovere The missing source contains 3 microcuries of Co-57, which poses no signifi-cant health problem and which is accelerator - produced (not subject to NRC regulations).

Media interest is high. Calls are being received at Region I.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been and is being kept informed.

A press release is not planned.

Region I, NRC, Philadelphia, Pa. received notification of this occurrence by telephone from a Boston newspaper reporter at 11:55 11/4/76.
