Subject:

CRACKS IN COLD WORK PIPING AT BWR'S (IEB 76-04)

All licensees of BWR power reactor facilities have been requested to develop information for systems N ated within or connected to the reactor coolant system boundary system to identify any piping or fittings which may have been.

cold worked without annealing. This request was contained in IE Bulletin 76-4.

No facility shutdowns are anticipated. This problem was highlighted by 3 through wall cracks at NMP (PN-50 and 53).

Nondestructive volumetric i

examination of similar piping revealed cracks in 11 pipe bends.

This bulletin (76-04) is unrelated to problems identified in 1975 when throughwall cracks were revealed in core spray piping at Dresden 2 (IE Bulletin No. 75-01 and IE Bulletin No.75-01A) and which required plant shut-down to perform representative sampling of welds in specific piping, also part of the reactor coolant pressure boundary.

Media interest is expected because of prior press coverage and sensitivity O

to nuclear power issues. The States will be informed. A press release is

/

9 planned.
