Subject:

REACTOR RECIRCULATION SYSTEM LEAK - SOCKET WELD While operating at 99% power, increased reactor coolant system leakage, approximately 6 gpm, into the containment drywell was noted at approxi-mately 6 a.m. on March 13, 1976.

Technical Specifications require the Plant to shutdown if the leak is 5 gpm or greater.

The reactor was shutdown by 12 noon and a drywell entry was made at 3:55 p.m.

to investigate the leak source.

The leak was found in an unisolatable 1" pressure tap line upstream of the "B" recirculation system (28" line), suction valve. The leak stemmed from an approximate 180 degree crack at the heat affected zone of a socket weld.

The leak occurred at the first pipe weld adjacent to the recirculation line.

The reactor was depressurized, the line removed at the crack, a plug in-o sorted, and a r.ap welded over the fitting in accerdance with code require-

/

'I ments. The reactor is currently returning to power.
