SAFETY' EVALUATION CONCERNING LOW PRESSURE TURBINE DISC INSPECTION -
GRAND GULF NUCLEAR STATION (GGNS), UNIT 1 (TAC NO. 56442)
By letter dated July 11, 1988, System Energy Resources, Inc., submitted the results of the ultrasonic inspection of the disc in low pressure turbine No. 3 at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, Unit 1.
The inspection was performed during
-the second refueling outage in accordance with Operating License Condition 2.C.(26).
The licensee supplied two strip charts on the hub bore inspection: one showed the inspection results using the 45 degree corner reflecting technique; the other showed the results using the 90 degree grazing incidence technique. A data sheet aise described inspection parameters, such as disc dimensions, inspection zones,. position of the arobe, sonic distance to defect and calibration setting. There were t1ree flaw indications on the hub bore. based on the corner reflecting technique. Additional inspections using the radial incidence and grazing incidence techniques led to the conclusion that the i
radial depth of the flaw indications is less than 2.5 millimeters. The licensee concluded that the indications were score marks resulting from the initial fit-up of the discs to the turbine shaft. No indications were found in the keyways.
We conclude that the inspection results are acceptable.
