WASHINGTON, D, C. 20555 o,
f
' September 18, 1989 CHAIRMAN The Honorable James T. Walsh United States House of Representatives Washington, D. C.
20515
Dear Congressman Walsh:
I am responding to your August 23, 1989 letter regarding'the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) Augmented Inspection Team (AIT) review of the 1981 spill of radioactive material at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Unit 1.
I understand that on August 28, 1989, Dr. Malcolm M. Knapp, Director,' Division of Radiation Safety and Safeguards, NRC Region I, discussed the preliminary findings of the AIT with you by telephone.
The AIT's findings at that time were that in July 1981, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation had released about 50,000 gallons of slightly contaminated water to Lake Ontario and 75,000 to 100,000 gallons to a subbasement in which about 150 55-gallon drums of radioactive sludge and spent resins were stored.
Niagara Mohawk appeared to have dealt properly with the release to the lake, but had taken only limited actions to decontaminate the subbasement.
Storage of the wastes in the subbasement did not appear to have caused any significant releases to the public nor to have resulted in any inappropriate worker exposures.
Niagara Mohawk had i
initiated efforts to decontaminate the subbasement and anticipated I
that the cleanup activities would be completed'by March 1990.
As Dr. Knapp informed you, the NRC will make its final conclusions following completion and review of'the AIT report.
I Members of the NRC staff will be prepared to brief you on this matter when the AIT report is issued.
Our Office of Congressional Affairs will contact your staff to set up a meeting date.
Sincerely,
%h.
Kenneth M. Carr O
