June 7, 1989 Docket No. 50-374 Mr. Thomas J. Kovach Nuclear Licensing Manager Comenwealth Edison Company P. O. Box'767 Chicago,LIllinois 60690 i
Dear Mr. Kovach:
SUBJECT:
LASALLE UNIT 2 BUNKER RAMO INSTRUMENTATION PENETRATION MODULES
REFERENCES:
(a). January 31, 1989, G. Holahan letter to H..E. Bliss (b) April 28,.1989, S. C. Hunsader' letter to T. E. Murley (c).-May 2, 1989, S. C. Hunsader-letter to T. E. Murley I
In reference (a), the NRC staff stated that without additional information reSarding. IR values recorded during peak LOCA ' temperatures and the test conditions when the lowest.value was recorded, there is insufficient test data and supporting analysis to demonstrate functional operability of the Bunker Ramo penetrations during design basis event conditions.
In response to the
-staff's concerns on this_ issue, Edison met with the NRC staff on April 25, 1989.to present the bases for Edison's position that the Bunker Ramo modules Lfor the LaSalle Unit 2 are environmentally qualified for the plant specific application.
t The NRC staf f has subsequently reviewed the Qualificatich Test Program Report' on Bunker Ramo's instrument penetration assemblies completed for Coranonwealth Edison Company b.y WYLE Laboratories. The purpose of.the qualification program was to verify tht: ability of the Bunker Rano electrical penetrations to perform their intended safety-related electrical functions before, during, and
.after environmental qualification tests. The main objective for testing the penetrations was to demonstrate that the Bunker Ramo Instrument Electrical Penetration Assen.blies would maintain their electrical integrity throughout plant accident conditions.-
