REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF SEALED SOURCE NO.; NR-460-S-914-S DATE: January 26, 1996 PAGE 2 OF 6 SEALED SOURCE TYPE:

Beta Source DESCRIPTION:

The Model 3B4G is a singly-encapsulated, variable-length gas source.

Each end of a 0.070 in. (0.178 cm) outer diameter,

'O.066 in. (0.168 cm) inner diameter stainless steel tube is inserted into a length of 0.125 in. (0.318 cm) outer diameter, 0.065 in. (0.165 cm) inner diameter copper tubing.

The two lengths of copper tubing are bored out to an inner diameter of 0.070 in. (0.178 cm) and a depth of 0.130 in. (0.330 cm) before inserting the stainless steel tube.

The two lengths of copper tubing are 1.000 in. (2.540 cm) and 0.630 in. (1.600 cm) long.

The copper tubes are silver brazed onto the stainless steel tube.

One of the copper tubes is then crimped and silver brazed to seal it.

The other tube is used to fill the unit with the desired amount of krypton-85 (Kr-85) gas.

Then, the other tube is crimped and silver brazed shut, sealing the Kr-85 gas inside.

The active length of the 3B4G source is defined as the length between the inner ends of the two copper tubes.

The stainless steel main tube is 0.260 in. (0.660 cm) longer than this.

Active lengths vary from 1.500 in. (3.810 cm) to 12.00 in. (30.48 cm).

The length of the complete 3B4G source is always 1.630 in. (4.140 cm) more than the active length.

DIAGRAM:

See Attachment 1 LABELING:

3M stated that the 3B4G source contains no labeling due to its size, but the source is always contained in some sort of shield or device which contains proper labeling.

l The 3B4G source is shipped in one of two ways.

The normal t

shipment method is to place the source in a type 2R container, which is in turn placed in a type 7A container.

The other shipment: method utilizes.a customized shipping container providedlby TSI, Inc.

TSI:provided a metal. housing into which the 3B4G source wasLinstalled.

A label attached to the TSI housing contained the activity in GBq, isotope, date, serial number, " Caution - Radioactive Material," and the company name.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

This source is designed to be used as a source of electrons,.with

-potential applications including ionizers of various sorts and static elimination'and beta gauging equipment within a temperature range of 32*F to 158'F (0*C to 70'C) and atmospheric pressure.

PROTOTYPE TESTING:

A prototype-of,the.Model 3B4G source was tested in accordance with the specifications'of ANSI N542-1977'and achieved a classification of 77C32131.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

2 An' air ionization unit having a 7.0 milligram /cm window density (45.6 cm window area) was used to measure the radiation dose z

rates from a 10 mci (370 MBq) Model 3B4G sealed source.

Radiation dose rates at 1.97" (5 cm) and 11.81" (30 cm) are.

listed below:

Position Radiation Dose Rate at 1.97" 11.81" Normal-to Window (no beta shield) 43.0 R/hr*

-With the inclusion o luminum shielding and air-absorption, it is estimated that e ernal radiation levels'at 11.81 in. and 39.37 in. (30.00 cm an 00.0 Lcm) would be negligible given that the range in alumin m o beta particles from Kr-85 is approximately

MINNES0TA MINING AND MANUFACTURING (3M) INACTIVE FILES FROM:

SUBJECT:

INACTIVATION OF REGISTRATIONS BASED ON AUGUST 6, 1991, LETTER.

I A number of the background files for the registration certificates requested (by 3M letter dated August 6, 1991) to be made inactive contain limited information on the products. A search of 3M registration, archive, and license files, and information in NUDOCS was performed to obtain additional information. Also, 3M was contacted to obtain any additional information that may have been in their files. 3M provided limited additional information concerning these products and indicated that the information provided represented all additional information in their files.

Additional information obtained from these sources ha; been added to the applicable registration files.

At the present time, the information contained in the background registration files represents all available information for these products.

In addition, a number of these products were originally reviewed and approved by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The reviews performed for these products to make the certificates inactive were based on the information available, the pr6vious reviews and approvals, and the historical use of the products (i.e., reports of failures or design problems, or the lack thereof).

In several instances, insufficient information was available to perform an adequate safety review.

In these instances, the certificates have been reissued based solely on the original AEC review and approval, and no additional safety review was performed.
