Dear Mr. Terry:

The staff issued Generic Letter (GL) 97-04, " Assurance of Sufficient Net Positive Suction Head for Emergency Core Cooling and Containment Heat Removal Pumpf on October 7,1997, and l

requested both a 30 day and a 90 day response from all addressees. The GL requested that licensees provide information necessary to confirm the adequacy of the net positive suction head available for emergency core cooling and containment heat removal pumps. By letter dated November 6,1997, TU Electric submitted its 30 day response to GL 97-04, and committed to provide the information requested in the 90 day response by April 7,1998, 90 days beyond the i

requested response dcte. During a telephone conversation with members of NRR on December 12,1997, TU Electric agreed to provide as much of the 90 day requested information as practical, during the week of January 12,1998. TU Electric provided that response on January 14,1998, and reaffirmed they would provide further clarifying infonnation by April 7, 1998, as agreed to by NRR in the telephone conversation of December 12,1997. On April 3, 1998, TU Electric requested another extension of the date for final clarifying informeon to April 14,1998. However, in that response TU Electric stated that the January 14,1998, i

response fully satisfied the required response as requested in of GL 97-04, and that no further response was necessary.

The staff has reviewed your protracted responses and has determined that additionalinformation is necessary. Please provide the information in the attached request within 30 days from the date of this letter. Should you have any questions, please contact me at (301) 415-1038.

What is the maximum sump temperature assumed in the Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) analysis?

Your response to question 2 in a letter dated January 14,1998, provides the results of the NPSH analyses provided by the NSSS vendor and the NE. The NE NPSH analyses appear to be more limiting. Which NPSH analysis is the calculation of record for Comanche Peak, Units 1 and 27 ENCLOSURE
