Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Unit Nos.1 & 2; Docket Nos. 50-317 & $0-318 Exemption and License Amendment Requests for Reduction of the Emercency Plannine Zone at Calvert Cliffs (TACS 60175/60176)

A. Tiernan (BG&E) to Mr.

A.

C. Thadani (NRC), dated January 10, 1989, Request for Amendment (c) Letter from Mr. S. A. Varga (NRC) to Mr. J. A. Tiernan (BG&E),

dated April 11, 1988, same subject Gentlemen:

We hereby withdraw our request for exemption from 10 CFR 50.47(c)(2) and 10 CFR 50 Appendix E and our request for a license amendment, References (a) and (b). Both requests involve our desire to reduce the plume exposure pathway emergency planning zone (EPZ) from an area of about ten miles in radius to an area of about two miles in radius. We withdraw these requests without prejudice should we decide to submit a similar request in the future.

In April 1988, Mr. Varga of the NRC staff informed us that our requests would not be reviewed until NRC completed its study of severe accident issues, to be captured in NUREG-IISO, " Reactor Risk Document." We now understand that NUREG-II5O is still in draft and is being extensively revised from the draft that was published in February 1987. Additionally, the NRC's study on severe accident issues has led to a request for each licensee to perform a systematic examination to identify any plant-specific vulnerabilities to severe accidents (Generic Letter 88-20).

We plan to conduct the systematic examination in accordance with Generic Letter 88-20.

We will also review NUREG-il50 when it is issued as a final report. Should we desire to resubmit our requests, we would do so following our systematic examination and our review of NUREG-1150.
