Subject:

Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket No. 5/395 Operating License No. NPF-12 40-Year Operating License Gentlemen:

By letter dated April 20, 1989, the NRC Staff requested that South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) provide additional information to support its application for a license amendment to extend the term of the operating license (0L) to a full 40 years from the date of the OL rather than the construction permit. SCE&G provided an initial response on May 19, 1989, t

indicating that it was evaluating the scope of the Staff request and was assembling the necessary information.

During a conversation on May 26, 1989, Elinor Adensam Director of Project Directorate II-1, asked that SCE&G propose a schedule to file its response to the Staff request for additional information. By this letter, SCE&G commits to file its response by June 19, 1989. SCE&G is in the process of compiling the necessary information and believes that the information requested can be supplied by that date. The Staff has assured us that, if by June 1,1989, SCE&G proposed an aggressive schedule to supply the requested information, the Staff would not act on the application until SCE&G has had an opportunity to respond and that thereafter the Staff review of the application would continue.

SCE&G believes the proposed schedule is expeditious and should be satisfactory to the Staff.

Due to the importance of this issue to SCE&G, your cooperation and assistance in maintaining a high level of priority in resolving this item is greatly appreciated.

Should you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me.

Very truly yours,
