This refers to the inspection conducted by Messrs. M.-E. Murphy and

~ C.. E. Johnson of this office and Mr. J. Rajan of the Office of Nuclear Reactor

Regulations (NRR) during the period March 7-10, 1989, of activities authorized

by NRC Operating Licenses DPR-51 and NPF-6 for the Arkansas Nuclear One

facility, and_ to the discussion of. our findings' with Mr. J. M. Levine and other

members of your staff at the conclusion of the inspection.

Areas examined during the inspection included Unit 1 decay heat removal. system

pipe supports and_ hanger damage, Unit 2 emergency diesel generator exhaust

manifold fires, and containment temperature profiles for both units. Within'these

areas, the inspection consisted of selective examination of- procedures and

representative records., interviews with personnel, and observations by the NRC:

inspectors. The inspection findings are documented in'.the enclosed inspection

report.

Within the scope of the . inspection. no violations or deviations were identified.

The deportability to the NRC of issues discussed in this report was not addressed

during this inspection. A management meeting will be scheduled in the near

future in Region IV where licensee reporting requirements will be discussed.

We have also examined actions you h' ave taken with regard to previously . -!

identified inspection _ findings. The status.of these items is identified in

paragraph 2 of the enclosed report.-
