SUMMARY

OF JUNE 13, 1989 KANAGEMENT MEETING WITH CAROLINA POWER & LIGHT COMPANY General On June 13, 1989, the HRC staff met with the Carolina Power & Light. Company to discuss future plans for Brunswick recirculation system piping replacement-and/or repair. The meeting was held in Rockville, Maryland; a list of attendeees is included as Enclosure 1.. Enclosure 2 is the meeting agenda.

Discussion Integranularstresscorrosioncracking(IGSCC)hasbeena.seriousconcernon the Brunswick recirculation system, especially the' ten risers from the manifold-to the reactor pressure vessel nozzles. Weld overlays were, utilized in the past-to justify continued operation on a per cycle basis.

The licensee has decided that the risers of both units will be replaced. The Unit I risers will be replaced during.the next outage, summer of 1990. The Unit 2 risers will be replaced during the next-outage,-fall of 1989, or the outage after the next, early 1991. The ability of the licensee to replace the Unit 2 risers in the fall of 1989 will depend upon having the material on-site, .

a. labor force in-place, and the inspection results. Nevertheless,-if the Unit 2 risers cannot be replaced during the upcoming outage, they will definitely be I replaced in early 1991. Details of the licensee's presentation are contained .!

in Enclosure 3. J The.' staff was satisfied with the licensee's approach, and requested that their commitments be formalized in a letter to the staff. The licensee agreed.
