MAIN STEAM LINE BREAKS IN ICE CONDENSER PLANTS - CATAWBA AND MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATIONS, UNITS 1 AND 2 (TACS 60973/67803 AND 67767/67768)
By letter dated April 7,1988, the NRC staff requested information on Westinghouse Topical Report WCAP-10988, " COBRA-NC, Analysis for a Main Steamline Break in the Catawba Unit 1 Ice Condenser Containment." The information was needed by the staff's contractor, Argonne National Laboratory, to complete its confirmatory analysis of WCAP-10986P, " Ice Condenser Drain Test Results, Data Analysis and Development of Drain Flow Model for the LOTIC-III Ice Condenser Code." You responded by letters dated June 13, September 7 and October 12, 1988.
Enclosed is a copy of the draft report by the staff's contractor.
It is based on the information you have provided. Please review the report and provide your comments within 60 days of receipt of this letter.
In particular, review Section 4.2 (Case 2 results) where the contractor finds that certain local containment temperatures significantly exceed the environmer.tal qualification temperature for Catawba. The staff recognizes that there may be unnecessary conservatism in the contractor's model. The McGuire plant is also affected due to the design similarity of the ice condenser containments in Catawba and McGuire.
